13 Days! Just under two weeks until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that in the past, the Voted PPEL funds have been used to purchase Lawn Care Equipment and Maintenance of that equipment? Lawn Care Equipment and the maintenance of that equipment is allowed under the rules for expenditures in the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy. The district owns its own lawn mowers, aerator, seeder, and a variety of other items used to care for all the grass and turf throughout the district. The district can also pay for the specialized products and the application of those products that are put on our fields to control weeds and pests to give our athletes the best playing surface that we can. Without the Voted PPEL Levy in place, these expenditures, like others that we have highlighted would have to come from the district’s general fund, which would most likely mean a reduction in staff or student-centered programs.
That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!
To learn more about this important funding stream and the projects that it funds, visit our website at www.wapellocsd.org and click on the menu button and look for the PPEL Renewal Election and look at the resources to get a better idea of the kinds of projects that we are able to fund because our voters have kept this levy in place for the past 24 years.

14 Days! Just 14 days until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that the Voted PPEL funds have been used to replace concrete throughout the district? Back in 2003, the Wapello High School Parking Lot was nothing more than a gravel parking lot that felt more like an off-road obstacle course at times due to the numerous potholes that would develop throughout the school year. The Board of Directors at that time felt that the time had come to create a safe paved surface for our students, staff, and visitors to park in. When paving was complete, it allowed for uniform parking spaces, a safe walking and driving surface, and allowed for more efficient snow removal of the parking area.
At the time of the paving, the board utilized the Voted PPEL Levy to borrow the funds to pave the parking lot all at once, rather than paying for sections of concrete on a yearly basis. There was a ten-year loan that was obtained and paid back in yearly payments from the Voted PPEL funds that were collected. Concrete replacement is one item that is eligible to be paid for from the Voted PPEL Levy, rather than the general fund. If the Voted PPEL funds were not available, it would have meant that the district could not pave the parking lot making a safer walking, driving, and parking area, or it would have been paid for through the district’s General Fund, in turn this could have meant teacher or staff reductions, or reductions to student programs.
That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

15 Days! Just 15 days until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that the Voted PPEL funds have been used to replace ceiling tiles in our attendance centers? Over time, the ceiling tiles that are in our attendance centers begin to sag and break down. In some of the original construction in our buildings 2' x 4' ceiling tile were used. We have found that over time, the tiles begin to sag in the middle and droop down, eventually breaking and falling. As we have been replacing ceiling tiles each year, we have switched to a 2' x 2' tile that is less likely to sag and break down. They provide a crisp clean look that we were desiring in our hallways and classroom space. Switching to a 2' x 2' tile has required some additional gridwork to be installed, but we hope that by adding the additional gridwork and going to a smaller tile that is less prone to sag and break, that we will have to replace the tiles less often, therefore freeing up money to be used on other projects. Because ceiling tile replacement is part of the upkeep of our buildings, it makes it eligible to be paid for out of the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy and takes pressure off of the General Fund Budget to help pay for more programs for students.
