March 23, 2020 update
We are continuing to fine-tune our food delivery plans. A reminder that we have 3 delivery locations: The elementary school, the Oakville community center, and the Woodland trailer court. Pickup begins at 10 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The past couple times, we've had several meals that have not been picked up. We base our preparations on the number of people who have expressed interest. If you are in need of the meals, please come and pick them up. We have absolutely no problem preparing and distributing the food, but we want to make sure that we are being as efficient as possible, while still meeting people's needs.
It's been awesome to see everyone searching for the various bears and other creatures around town. Just another example of how Wapello can take a bad situation and still find something good in it.
Wash your hands.
Cover your cough.

Wash your hands.
Let me know if you have any questions. If I don't know the answer right now, I will find it out and send it out in a future update.

Reposted from Wapello Fire and Rescue:
Wapello Fire and Rescue received some great news today!!
Each October, as part of National Fire Prevention Week, Wapello Elementary students participate in a poster contest. The local winners are awarded a T-Shirt from Wapello Fire and Rescue, and the local winners in grades 3-5 are sent on to the state contest.
Those entries have been judged, and we were notified today that Wapello Elementary Student, Kenna Small was awarded 3rd place in the 5th Grade Division of the Iowa Fire Prevention Safety Poster Contest!
Kenna will be presented with an award at the Ackley Fire Department on May 2. Her artwork will also be on display throughout the Iowa State Fair in the Hall of Flame.
Congratulations Kenna! It was welcome news to receive after a week filled with uncertainty!
On behalf of Wapello Fire and Rescue, please help us to congratulate Kenna Small on this outstanding accomplishment!

March 20, 2020 update:
There hasn't been very much new information for schools released today, which is probably a blessing. It's been a torrent of information the past few days. We did hear that states can now apply for a waiver to cancel state testing for the year. Iowa would need to apply to the federal Department of Education for this waiver. I fully expect Iowa to apply, so I think it is safe to say that state testing will not happen this year. (Try not to be too sad about this, kids!).
Try to have a peaceful weekend, everyone. We've all been asked to make major changes in a very short time.

To any early elementary parents, if your child's teacher prepared packets and you have not picked them up, they are available at the Superintendents office until the end of the day. Any remaining packets will be mailed at the end of the day.
Thanks to all that picked them up.

March 19, 2020 Update
1. Many, many thanks to all of the staff who have been working to take care of things as we navigate this period of closure. From cleaning the buildings, to preparing food, to gathering learning resources, to everything else that is happening, I am beyond proud of what I have seen happening. If you don’t think the employees of the school love your kids, then you are simply not paying attention.
2. Also, I am humbled beyond belief at the outpouring of community support that has been expressed toward the school district. I have lost track of the number of people who have contacted me and offered to help in any way they can. These are challenging times, but we will get through them because of the strong community of which we are a part.
3. Remember that food pickup resumes on Monday of next week. Pickups are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00. Sites are the elementary school, Oakville community center, and Woodland trailer court.
4. The blood drive at the Briggs center is probably the busiest blood drive I have seen in a long time. Wapello sees a need, and Wapello works to fill that need. #wearewapello #wapellotribepride
5. Governor Kim Reynolds held a press conference today and stressed that all Iowans have a role to play in slowing down the spread of COVID-19. The guidance remains the same. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands again. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands. Respect “social distancing” standards. Wash your hands yet again.
Please let me know of any questions you have. If I don’t have the answers right now, I will work to get them for you and send them out in a future update.

Here is today's read aloud from our Middle School Special Education teacher, Mrs. Humiston. Enjoy! #wearewapello. #wapellotribepride
