Wapello High School staff and students would like to wish a Congratulations to the following students. In a normal year, they would be among those walking across the stage to receive their diploma this Sunday. But this final semester has been anything but normal, so we honor them here now, until we can officially later this summer.
Congratulations to Matthew Engle, Alex Earnest, Oshen McGowan and Autumn Starkweather as they plan to graduate with the WHS class of 2020 #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

May 21 Update:
That's right folks, I'm back. Did you miss me? I've been out of commission for a little while, but I'm slowly working my way back.
The big news to come out of Des Moines is that high school baseball and softball are opened up. Practices can begin on June 1 and games can begin on June 15. There is a laundry list of requirements that coaches have to follow regarding distancing of kids and other factors, but we can work with that.
Unfortunately, JH baseball and softball will not be coming back in June. This was announced today and will surely come as a disappointment to many folks.
As we learn more about HS baseball/softball schedules, we'll send out the information. At this point, it is looking as if baseball and softball games will happen at alternate sites, in order to reduce crowd numbers. The Southeast Iowa Superconference will be determining specific schedules.
Stay tuned for more information.
As Iowa starts to open up, the guidelines are still valid:
Wash your hands.
Cover your cough.
Wash your hands.
Stay home if you are sick.
Wash your hands.
Practice social distancing. 6 feet is more than you think it is. Remember, one butter cow's distance.
Wash your hands.

Today's Senior Shoutout goes to Leigha Weyrick. She is the daughter of Sydney and Fred Weyrick. While in high school Leigha has been active in Basketball, Soccer, and Band all four years. Leigha's plans after graduation are still to be determined. We asked Leigha to name a teacher/staff member who has had an impact on her life. She named Mr. Brandon Brown for this because, "He is a great basketball coach! I appreciate how he wants to build the Wapello girls basketball program into a winning tradition and how he made us feel like a family - including the team meals. Thank you for letting me be a part of the team. I am looking forward to watching where he takes the program in the future." When asked her advice for underclassmen, Leigha said "Always give your all and go to all summer practices - that is where you become great! Believe in yourself. You are coming from a great place. Go to open gym in the summer. Cheer for your teammates on your teams." Congratulations and best wishes to Leigha on her graduation from WHS with the class of 2020. #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

Midweek brings another Senior Shoutout. Today's first one is for Emerald Elton. Emerald is the daughter of Georgia and Alen Elton. Emerald worked hard in school and was able to graduate early this year. Her future include attending Southeastern Community College, then transfer to a four year college to purse a degree related to the environment. We asked Emerald to name a teacher/staff member who has had an impact on her life. She named Ms. Rena Philp for this because, "[with] her being the school counselor, she was always there to talk to me when I needed it. I knew I could count on her to give me good advice." When asked her advice for underclassmen, Emerald said "Enjoy the rest of each individual school day while you can, before you’re never a teen again." Congratulations and best wishes to Emerald on her graduation from WHS with the class of 2020. #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

Is anyone that lives near Wapello High School missing a dog? This little one is at the WHS Greenhouse. If you recognize this dog, would you please notify the owners that it is hanging out at the WHS Greenhouse? Thank You!

Our first Senior Shoutout for today goes out to Jarin Poole. Jarin is the son of Jennifer and Byron Poole. While Jarin focused on his studies through high school, he had been working at J&S Tube prior to the COVID-19 shutdown. After graduation, Jarin plans to attend a two year program to study cybersecurity and networking. We asked Jarin to name a teacher/staff member who has made an impact on his life while in school. He named Mr. Jason Marshall because, "[he] helped me get through my years of school." When we asked Jarin his advice to the underclassmen of WHS, his answer, "If I can make it, you can make it." Congratulations and best wishes to Jarin as he graduates from WHS with the class of 2020! #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #Class of 2020

It's extremely rare that you see one of the Poole twins without the other. So today's second Senior Shoutout goes to Jacinda Poole. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Byron Poole. Jacey also spent her high school career focusing on her studies, and is also employed at J&S Tube. In fact, her job maybe how she's decided what her future plans will hold; which is to attend Southeastern Community College to study Precision Machining. We asked Jacey to name a teacher/staff member who has had an impact on her life. She named Mr. Bill Duhnam for this because, "He helped me find what I want to do." When asked her advice for underclassmen, Jacey said "Take it one step at a time even if it gets tough." Congratulations and best wishes to Jacey on her graduation from WHS with the class of 2020. #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020
