Check out this WHS Passion Project success story! A group of Mrs. Mairet’s Tribe Time students started a fresh salad lunch business for their Passion Project! They have designed a menu, taken orders, figured the amounts of items needed, figured cost and completed their shopping. Today was the first day that salad orders were delivered to teachers. Did you know “Employability Skills” is a part of the required 21st Century Skills standards of the Iowa Core Curriculum? Mr. Marshall took three seniors to S & J Tube’s workforce recruitment day. These students got to participate in a company tour, completed job applications and interviews, and were hired to work part-time at S & J Tube as part of the WHS work experience program. The Wapello Elementary School Student Council held their Friday morning sucker sales today. Mrs. Shipman and student council members handed out lots of suckers and smiles this morning.

What an exciting day for the students, and staff of Wapello Community School District! Mr. Bill Dunham, our Industrial Arts Teacher applied to the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence and was notified earlier this year that he was a Semi-Finalist who would move on to compete for part of the $1,000,000 in prize money through Harbor Freight Tools. Today, Mr. Kevin Hundgate representing Harbor Freight Tools was on hand for a special school wide assembly to announce that Mr. Dunham was selected as a recipient of one of the 15 second place prizes. Along with his second place finish, Mr. Dunham was awarded a $50,000 check, of that $50,000 Mr. Dunham is awarded $15,000 personally and $35,000 will be given to Wapello High School for use in the Industrial Arts Program to fill the wishes of Mr. Dunham! Mr. Dunham was also awarded a Harbor Freight Tool Chest as his trophy for his second place finish. Wapello Community School would like to thank Harbor Freight Tools for sponsoring their Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence contest and would like to extend word of Congratulations to Mr. Dunham for entering the contest and being selected as a 2nd place finisher in the contest! Wapello High School is proud to have you as a member of our valued staff and an instructional leader to our students. What a great day to be an Indian!
