Olyvia Malone, lovingly referred to as “Lyv”, says that her “Senior year wasn’t baaaaaad!”
Daughter of Jon and Tammi Malone, Lyv is involved in several sports and activities at WHS. She is a two year member of the basketball and golf teams, as well as the drama productions. She is a three year member of the band, a four year member of the volleyball team and FFA, and a five year member of the softball team. Lyv is also a leader of her class as a member of student council, FCA and National Honor Society.
Lyv says she has spent a ton of time in Ms. Eakins office and says Ms. Eakins has been her most influential staff member because “[she] is always there to talk about school work, scholarships, college and my boy problems. She is an amazing listener and she pushes me to become a better person everyday.”
After graduating, Lyv plans to attend Iowa State University to major in animal science.
Her advice to the underclassmen is to not procrastinate!

The Southeast Iowa Battle of the Books, a reading competition hosted by the AEA for students in grades 4-8, was held virtually this week; Wapello Schools had three teams that participated.
Students in 4th and 5th Grades had to read 15 chapter books for the competition and answer questions about all of the titles in a timed, 100-question test.
5th Graders Abigail Lanz, Audrey Ball, Paisley Shafer, and Kohwyn Knight, and 4th Grader Baylor Lanz were recognized for reading all 15 titles.
The 5th-grade team, "The Blue Bookworms," finished in 4th place. Team members were Abigail Lanz, Audrey Ball, Aaliyah Harding, Karlee Allworth, Kohwyn Knight, and Paisley Shafer.
The 4th-grade team, "The Rapid Reader Girls," placed 11th; team members were Baylor Lanz, Addilyn Strickland, Averie Hammer, and Adeline Bishop.
The 6th-grade team had to read 18 chapter books and also take a timed test of 100 questions. Only 2 team members, Bennett Shutt, and Jonathan Warnstaff, participated and placed 11th. (Two additional members were absent on the day of the competition and were unable to participate.)
After the test, students were able to participate in an interactive Zoom session with the featured author of this year's competition, Roseanne Parry.

Cristian Tolentino’s time spent repairing Chromebooks at school, helped his success on the eSports team for three years. Cristian credits Mr. Peck as having a huge impact on his high school career by starting the TIES program and encouraging him to play videogames on a competitive level. Mr. Peck also invited Cristian to Disney World where he accidentally broke his collarbone! While at WHS, Cristian also played soccer for one year.
Cristian is the son of Cristina Trillo and he plans to attend Iowa State University to study computer engineering. Cristian also plans to pursue a master's degree at ISU.
Cristian parts with this advice: “If you do it last minute, it only takes a minute.”

JH Football Meeting.
Soccer, FFA, and Spanish Club were activities you could find Mia Ramirez participating in during high school. Mia was also a member of the National Honor Society. Mia states she spent most of her time during high school “spilling tea” with her friends.
Mrs. Humiston had the biggest influence on Mia during school because, “she is the best and always makes sure all her students understand how important and special they are to her. It means a lot and I will cherish the memories with her forever.”
Mia is the daughter of Jose and Araceli Ramirez. She plans to attend Southeastern Community College for medical coding and billing. She shares this advice with underclassmen, “At the end of the day all you have left is memories so appreciate every moment and get involved in things you usually wouldn’t.”
A quote Mia leaves us with is, “I have to be successful because I like expensive things!”
Go be great, Mia!
Casey Parker Short, the son of Darren and Stephanie Short, spent most of his time at WHS studying, despite being very active in several extracurricular activities. Football, basketball, baseball, golf, and band kept Casey busy. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Casey advises fellow underclassmen, “to do as many activities in high school as you can. Don’t let anybody talk you out of doing something because it’s ‘not cool’ or ‘not fun’; don’t worry about what other people think of you. You’re only here for 4 years - have some fun.”
Casey’s favorite teacher while in school was Mrs. Ungerer because she is the nicest person ever and always has a great attitude. She is always super happy to help you no matter how many questions you ask.
Casey will be attending Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids to study construction management, but he leaves with his favorite quote from Coach Parsons, “DO YOUR JOB!”

Caleb Ealey, son of Darrin and Kris Ealey, plans to attend Marshalltown Community College to complete the Powerline Technician Program in the fall.
Throughout his high school career, Caleb has been involved in football for four years and wrestling for two years. Mr. Parsons has been one of his most influential teachers because he “Pushed me on and off the football field to make me a better athlete and person.”
Caleb’s advice to the underclassmen is to “Enjoy it while you can.”

“It doesn’t matter what others are doing, it matters what you are doing.” Wise words from senior Carley Maine to the underclassmen. While in high school, Carley participated in softball, football cheer, poms squad, volleyball, and band. While her high school and college classes have kept her busy, Carley says she has spent most of her time working and, of course, hanging out with her friends.
Carley says that Mrs. Marshall is her most influential teacher because, “She is nothing but kind to everyone and is the smartest woman I know.”
Carley is the daughter of Chris and Melinda Maine and plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa - Allen College for the Sonography program.

Talking with friends and participating in volleyball, golf, softball, and track have kept senior Dakota Griffin busy during high school! Dakota is the daughter of Shanna Edwards and Riley Edwards.
Dakota states that Mr. Parsons had the most influence on her because, “he pushed me to be a better person and taught me that lifting has great benefits.”
After graduation, Dakota plans to attend Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids for nursing and then transfer to Mount Mercy University to earn her bachelor's degree and become a registered nurse. Dakota’s message to underclassmen is, “You are young and dumb - live your life!” She also quotes Hannah Montana in saying, “Nobody’s perfect, but here I am!”
