Some 4th and 5th grade students from Wapello Elementary School represented their school well today at the southeast region's annual "Battle of the Books" contest, held via Zoom. Eight different teams participated in the event, representing 6 schools. Students had to read 10 chapter books over the past few months, and today they collaborated to take a test to show what they remembered. Wapello's 5th grade team, the Indians, finished in 2nd place overall, with a score of 74/80. The 4th grade team, the Arrows, finished in 5th place, scoring 69/80. Team members were as follows: 5th grade--Bliven Buffington, Teagan Maddux, Bennett Shutt, Taeya Wagner, and Jonathan Warnstaff; 4th grade: Madison Green, Hayden Hunt, Kohwyn Knight, Abigail Lanz, and Paisley Shafer. Mrs. Barb Dunham coached both teams this year. As part of the event, the featured author for this year's event, Dan Gutman, shared a presentation about his life as an author, and advised the students about how he crafts the perfect story. In addition to his presentation, he also took questions from the students and answered them. It was an exciting opportunity for the kids to interact (even through Zoom!) with a popular children's author, and the kids were excited to find out the titles of some of his favorite books that he has written. In addition, he gave them a "sneak peak" of a book that he recently finished, by reading chapter 1 of his most recent book that is not published yet, but will come out in June. Excitement was definitely in the air at WES this morning, and the library will have a newfound need for some Dan Gutman books on its shelves! Congratulations, BoB Teams! We are proud of you! #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride
