Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds were used to build the Greenhouse that is utilized by our Agricultural Education Department and FFA? At the time, there had been discussions for several years to build a Greenhouse that could be utilized by our Agricultural Education Department and FFA that would allow students to gain hands on experience in growing different kinds of plants in an educational lab type setting. Over the years, the greenhouse has proven to be a useful tool and a way of making money for the FFA while giving students real world experience in several different areas. Whether that be plant propagation, greenhouse management, ag sales, or even with upgrades to the facility by adding additional plumbing in the greenhouse or electrical. All areas have played an important role in shaping Wapello High School Students for life beyond the walls of K-12 education. The Wapello FFA has produced multiple State Champion teams in the areas of Nursery/Landscape and Floriculture. Having a greenhouse that students can utilize has definitely been a big plus to those students. Graduates from Wapello have also gone on to own their own Nursery/Landscape and Greenhouse related businesses. By using the Voted PPEL revenue the costs to build the Greenhouse didn’t affect our General Fund Budget and keeps more money in the budget for programs for our students and in this case, it enhanced programs that are funded through the General Fund Budget, and allows our students expanded opportunities! That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds can be used to refinish our gym floor surfaces? Over time, our gym floor playing surfaces get worn down and need revitalized to allow for a safe playing surface for our students and athletes. Typically, every five to seven years, we have the surface totally refinished by sanding the finish down to the bare wood. This is a time intensive process that takes all of the finish and painted lines off of the floor. Once the floor has been sanded down, the lines and center court logo are repainted, and a new finish is applied to the floor. In between the major refinishing, our maintenance department applies a maintenance coating of wax to keep the playing surface in great shape. Since this process is very time and labor intensive, it is a significant cost to complete. The Voted PPEL allows for these costs to be paid for from revenues collected through the Voted PPEL Levy since this type of work is considered upkeep of our Physical Plant. By using the Voted PPEL revenue the costs don’t affect our General Fund Budget and keeps more money in the budget for programs for our students! That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

7 Days! Just one week until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds can be for playground surfaces? When Wapello Elementary's playground is in need of replacement surfaces underneath the equipment, we have typically placed one of two types of material. Small Washed River Rock is one option, it gives a relatively soft-landing surface if student’s fall while playing on the playground. The stones have been ground down so that there are no sharp edges that could cut or injure the student. The other option is playground grade wood chips. This material has been run through a special grinder when they are manufactured to smooth the edges and not leave material that will injure the student if they fall while playing on the playground equipment. Both are options that are available to us locally and the great thing about these two types of material, is that we can use either and pay the costs for the material out of the Voted PPEL Levy. Since neither of these types of material last forever, we must refill the playground areas periodically with new material, and when this is needed, we can use the Voted PPEL funds to pay for the materials. This doesn’t affect our General Fund Budget and keeps more money in the budget for programs for our students! That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

8 Days! We are down to just over one week until the election! Eight days until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds were used to add an air conditioning unit at the Wapello Elementary Kitchen. Since the Wapello Elementary Kitchen serves as the main kitchen for the district, there is a lot of equipment that works hard to prepare over 500 meals each day. With multiple pieces of equipment running at the same time, it generates a lot of heat inside the kitchen. Installing A/C in the Elementary Kitchen was a need more than a want. With all of the heat that is generated, it was causing other pieces of equipment to fail prematurely. For instance, the refrigerator was having to work harder than it was designed to cool food due to the extreme heat in the room generated from the other appliances. Our Maintenance Department worked to find a solution that would cool the room and not have the equipment working so hard to maintain the required temperatures for storing food.
Fortunately, the Wapello CSD has the Voted PPEL in place currently and could use this funding stream to pay for this project. By tapping this important part of our overall budget, we didn’t have to turn to an already lean General Fund to pay for this equipment to be installed. We were able to utilize Voted PPEL which meant that we didn’t have to use funds that are designated for students and their programs, or staff salaries. It is important to keep the Voted PPEL Levy in place for the next ten years so that we can rely on this funding stream to help with projects around the district. That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

It will be a quiet few weeks here as we transition between our Winter and Spring Sports Seasons. The only activity we have this week will be our JH Boys Basketball team will close out their season when they travel to L-M for a 4:30 game on Tuesday. A great time to get your student's caught up on class work that may be missing, AR Points that need to be earned, or a chance to work a little ahead to finish strong in the 3rd Quarter.

9 Days! We are down to the single digits! Nine days until the Voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy Renewal Election that will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Briggs Civic Center in Wapello. The polls for this very important election will be open from 7:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds were used to replace our Boilers at the Wapello Elementary Building? When the original 1956 boilers finally began to fail back in 2004, the Board of Education at that time began to look at options to replace the critical component to make sure our building had heat throughout the winter. Once the plans were finalized and a contractor selected to remove the old boiler and replace it with two new more energy efficient units, the board needed to decide how to pay for this project. The board looked at their options and felt that the Voted PPEL was the best way to pay for this project. The Voted PPEL was providing sufficient revenue to meet the obligations of the district and still pay for this project in full without having to borrow funds. The Voted PPEL Levy has been used two other times to replace aging heating equipment in the different areas of Wapello High School. Having this important funding stream available to utilize, once again allowed the district to complete an important project without having to turn to the General Fund to complete a project such as this one. No student programs or positions were affected by this project since it was not paid for out of the General Fund. That is today's Voted PPEL Fact, so now you know!

Did you know that Voted PPEL Funds can be used for our 1:1 computer initiative? When we are purchasing devices in bulk, we can apply Voted PPEL Funds to pay for the machines, the Google Licenses, and the device bags that are issued with each and every Chromebook? We are proud to provide all of our 6-12 students with devices that they can carry with them to each class, and also take home to complete assignments and projects. Our younger students have access to devices in the classroom, the only difference is that the devices stay in the building and do not travel home with students. For our youngest students, we have tablets that are utilized for learning in the classroom. Our 1:1 program is another tool in the tool box that educators are using to help shape our students to become productive learners in an ever changing society.
